Basics of Biological Pond Filters
March 12, 2012 · admin · Ponds, tips · 0 CommentsThe term biological filter refers to any material that helps nitrifying bacteria. The two types of bacteria are called Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter, these are the bacteria responsible for the nitrifying cycle that converts fish waste to fertilizer. This keeps your fish healthy and happy.
Biological filters are as simple as running a stream or waterfall over ornamental pebbles and can get more complex as the size of the pond requires. Running water over surface areas with good aeration is the key to promoting beneficial bacteria. The bacteria then clean the water passing over it, converting decaying matter from Ammonia to Nitrites and Nitrates. After removing most of the organic matter with a mechanical filter before it’s broken down, the biological filter will take care of the rest and give your fish a clean pond to live in.
The bottom of a pond is also a fertile place for bacteria to grow. It often does hold bad bacteria along with the good. When it’s not maintained the bad bacteria take over and turn your healthy clean pond into an anaerobic pond which is dirty, smelly, and deadly for fish and aquatic life.
