Over 10 feet high the water works it’s way down three big drops in the water fall finally reaching the pond below in their backyard courtyard. Pebbles through out the area and a sitting area make for a nice retreat to relax and read a book.

Water lilies and Lotus are the most common of the deep water plants. Other plants grow in shallow areas of ponds called Marginal Plants.

Most pond plants like the moist bog conditions around the edge of the pond, some even grow completely submerged in the pond water. Then there are floating plants which float on the surface of the ponds.

In this pond photo there are a number of pond plants from submerged to floating. All helping to keep the pond healthy and clean for the fish and wildlife.

Remove debris that’s built up over the winter. Sludge left to build up will decay and become a source for algae to grow. Start removing debris as soon as the ice melts or you see your fish become more active. Use your pond net or hand to clean up the larger debris. This will help the cold weather bacteria do its job and start cleaning. Spring clean is a good cold water bacteria. No matter where you live or what climate you should be cleaning your pond of the larger debris as often as possible.

Start running your filtration system. Put the nets and mats back in your skimmer box as well as the biological media and mats in to your waterfall box.

Re-install your pond pump or skimmer. Once the water temperature goes up to around 50 degrees, the pumps or skimmers will oxygenate the water and keep it circulating which will clear up the water. If you live in a warmer climate and have been running year round you should have an aerator installed to get even more oxygen into the water.

Begin adding beneficial bacteria once the temperatures hit 50 or so, this will boost the biological filters, keep adding as needed throughout the summer.

Start planting pond plants around the pond, once they begin growing after a few weeks begin fertilizing

Change the water in the pond. Before the summer in the early spring it’s the perfect time to change the water. At least half the water can be changed at this time. If you plan to do more be sure to acclimate your fish back into the new water so they are not shocked by the change in temperature. Make sure if you’re adding tap water to treat with a dechlorinator

Of all the reasons homeowners want water features in their yard, hearing the peaceful sound of running water is the most popular. In this waterscape

the homeowners added waterfalls, and streams to their garden. Coming over the back retaining wall the first waterfall is clearly the largest. I can imagine the sound the water is making hitting the second pool below.

That is quite a water feature, clearly the homeowners wanted to hear more than a trickle of water in a stream. With a sheer drop into the pool below it’s producing a steady sound of crashing water.

A smaller waterfall from the pool leads down to a stream wrapping around the sitting area on the patio. This is my ideal type of waterscape, I not only want to see moving water but hear it falling into a pool and running down a fast moving stream.

If you would like to hear the sounds of a waterfall and stream in your backyard call Atlanta Waterscapes at 770-361-7446
