The term biological filter refers to any material that helps nitrifying bacteria. The two types of bacteria are called Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter, these are the bacteria responsible for the nitrifying cycle that converts fish waste to fertilizer.  This keeps your fish healthy and happy.
